- ➤ The Pullman Chamber and Visitor Center has hired Washington State University alumnus Joseph (JJ) Martin as its new Tourism Promotions Manager, effective October 29th. Martin, a longtime Pullman resident with experience in brand marketing, community development, and event management at WSU, University of Idaho, and New York City Parks and Recreation, is expected to boost local tourism. - ➤ Luna opened its elevated cocktail bar today in Pullman—creating a new venue for guests to enjoy cocktails. KXLY
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ WSU appeared in court this week over the 2019 hazing death of 19-year-old Sam Martinez, who died from alcohol poisoning at the Alpha Tau Omega house off campus—lawyers argued that state law protects schools from off-campus harm while critics say WSU ignored known hazing risks. KLEW
- ➤ The Washington State Supreme Court heard arguments in a hazing case at WSU — details of the allegations remain limited — and will announce its decision later. KXLY
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Whitman County Public Health in Colfax released an advisory saying wild geese contracted avian flu for the first time this fall+ residents with close contact are urged to wear protective gear and report any sick or dead wildlife to state agencies. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ On October 1, Whitman County Public Hospital District No. 1A approved a $41 million patient care expansion for Pullman Regional Hospital that will add outpatient, imaging, lab, surgery, and emergency services and include a new medical office building. The groundbreaking is set for November 11 and the project will finish in late 2027—voters backed the project with a $27.5 million bond in 2022. Whitman County Gazette
