COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Pullman Moose Lodge is hosting the Beyond Pink Purse Auction at Zeppoz in Pullman today—offering stylish purses, backpacks, and mystery toolboxes in both silent and live auctions that benefit the NW Cancer Foundation of Hope. The event runs from 5:30—7:30 p.m.  Pullman Radio
  • Tomorrow, the Fall Vintage & Handmade Fair will be held at WSU’s Beasley Coliseum from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, where local vendors will sell handmade jewelry, pottery, artwork, home décor and vintage treasures — the fair will take place rain or shine and is presented by DLG Enterprises.  Pullman Radio
  • On Oct. 3, the Whitman County Gazette was named the second best among newspapers of its size in the state (after the Sequim Gazette) and earned its second General Excellence award, while staff including owner/publisher Roger Harnack and sports reporter Matthew Strissel received top honors in photography and sports reporting (reflecting a strong local media tradition).  Whitman County Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Pullman Chamber of Commerce will host its October General Membership Presentation and Luncheon at the Courtyard by Marriott on Tuesday, October 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—Steve Scranton from Washington Trust Bank will present while lunch is provided by The Bistro. Registration is required by noon on Friday.  Pullman Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Latah County Historical Society is hosting a Moscow Cemetery tour led by Sandra Kelly on October 12 and October 26 at 1:30 p.m.; space is limited to 25 participants on a first-come first-served basis. Attendees will learn the historical stories behind the cemetery stones.  Pullman Radio
  • Genesee’s Little Pink House Gallery will host its fall exhibit OBSERVATION on October 12th and 13th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. displaying regional artists working in paint, clay, wood, and pencil (gallery owner Ellen Vieth said the show offers a clear look at new artistic views).  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Moscow School District shut down its computer network last Friday after a hack disrupted classroom instruction. Superintendent Shawn Tiegs emailed district families, students and staff to say IT staff + cybersecurity specialists are investigating the breach and working to restore the system.  Pullman Radio
  • The University of Idaho is holding its 'Holla Back' Homecoming weekend—starting today with a craft brew festival at the Dan O’Brien Track and Field Complex from 4:30 to 7:30 followed by a campus serpentine walk at 8:00 and a rally with fireworks at the Kibbie Dome. Saturday will feature a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 7:00 to 10:00 at the downtown fire station, a homecoming parade at 10:00, and a football game at 2:00 when the Vandals host Northern Colorado.  Pullman Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Whitman Public Health issued an advisory after detecting avian influenza in wild geese in Whitman County this fall. Residents should avoid handling sick or dead birds and use proper protective equipment if exposed, while hunters are advised to cook all meat thoroughly.  Pullman Radio

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The old Johnson School building, closed in the 1940s and now in disrepair, is up for sale with bids accepted by the Pullman School District office until 2:00 on November 19—after two years of resolving its title paperwork. The building, once used by the Johnson Grange, sits on nearly three acres in the small community south of Pullman.  Pullman Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves football team lost to state No. 10 Waitsburg Cardinals 58-30 on Oct. 3 while its 4-1 record keeps it ranked No. 16, and the volleyball team lost 3-0 to the Pomeroy Pirates on Oct. 2 and 3-0 to the Dayton Bulldogs on Oct. 7. The football team will face the Pirates today at 3 p.m. in Tekoa and the volleyball team will play the Garfield-Palouse Vikings on Oct. 14.  Whitman County Gazette
