- ➤ A 4.7-mile weighted hike will be held on September 20 at Spud Hill in Deary to benefit Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3913 in Kendrick—registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at Deary City Park and the event starts at 10:00 a.m., with a BBQ following at 11:00 a.m. after participants complete the challenge. - ➤ The Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute will host its free Taste of PCEI Fall Festival on Sunday, September 21 from noon to 3:00 pm with live music by the Sultry Swines, animal exhibits, honey and apple tasting, a scavenger hunt, crafts, and face painting—while an adjacent Electric Transportation Fair co-hosted by Citizens’ Climate Lobby will offer test drives of electric vehicles. - ➤ Washington State University welcomed 4,420 freshmen this semester, a 1.6% rise from last fall—WSU Tri-Cities recorded an 11% increase while overall enrollment slightly declined. KLEW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Emergency repairs on the SR26 bridge in Colfax are delaying traffic at the junction of SR26 and US195 for drivers heading to Saturday's Apple Cup game. WSDOT said crews will guide traffic from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friday — motorists should avoid using the Airport Road detour. Pullman Radio
- ➤ The city announced its outdoor irrigation season will end on Tuesday, Sept.30 — a measure to conserve water and protect the Grande Rone Aquifer, the city’s only drinking water source. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ At a planning commission meeting in Colfax on Sept. 10, longtime resident Ken Duft argued that the wind turbine presentation by Dr. McCunney and Dr. Ollson was biased and should be removed from the meeting minutes. The experts stated they presented their findings as a free service while the commission will seek additional balanced testimony as they draft a new code. Whitman County Gazette
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local leaders held a summit that addressed the fentanyl crisis + mental health challenges. The meeting discussed ways to improve treatment access and prevent further harm in the community. KXLY
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ A tailgate party for the Apple Cup will be held at WSU Marriotts on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.—attendees can meet in the parking lots before the game. Pullman Radio
- ➤ WSU will launch intermittent fireworks at every home football game this season—there will be no full postgame display. Pullman Councilman Nathan Weller said residents on College Hill were disturbed by the loud booms and he asked city staff to publicize the events—staff have not taken action. Pullman Radio
