Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of September.
Good morning, Pullman.
💼 Business
Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, based in Pullman, purchased a large industrial building in Post Falls to build electronic devices similar to those made in Pullman and Lewiston.
The facility will become operational in 2027 and create 250 jobs with starting pay at $26 an hour + up to $10 shift differential.
📰 Economy
City officials tied Pullman's 9% retail sales decline in Q4 2025, about a 17 million dollar drop, to heavy government spending in 2024 on a downtown rebuild and a new airport terminal — when adjusting for these projects, the drop aligns with state and national trends.
Pullman households face rising energy bills as interest rates tick up, a trend that could impact monthly expenses in coming days (residents are encouraged to review their energy plans).
🎓 Education
Washington State University holds an open house at 3 p.m. and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. today for the new Schweitzer Engineering Hall on campus.
The $80 million project features modern classrooms, collaborative workspaces and student support areas funded by state, private, and Boeing investments.
Adams Elementary reached a construction milestone on campus, and school officials said the next phase will begin soon.
🏛️ Government
Public crossings of Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River south of Colfax are delayed today due to maintenance — delays may last up to four hours.

Whitman Hospital & Medical Clinics named Holly Shelden as its new CEO, succeeding Hank Hanigan after 12 years in charge.
Shelden, from Garfield with a Master of Health Administration from Montana State, will lead the Colfax-based organization serving rural communities.
