ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Volunteer firefighters from Whitman County Fire District 12 responded to two fires in Pullman on Aug. 31—one at Chipman Trail along the Moscow Pullman Highway around 5 p.m. that burned trees within less than an acre and a second near Fire Station 3 at about 10 p.m. that burned grass and brush, with witnesses reporting nearby fireworks. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pullman School District received a $9,500 Nez Perce grant on August 27 to fund teacher training that will help develop the STI curriculum for fifth graders on their outdoor education day—Superintendent Robert Maxwell said. Whitman County Gazette
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Public Health officials said the water at Nisqually John Landing is toxic after a test on Aug. 25 measured 105 ug/L of Microcystin, and they urged residents to keep pets and livestock out of the water + avoid eating local fish. Officials will continue to monitor the toxin levels each week and remove warning signs when the water becomes safe. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ A Washington State University-led team received a $4 million DOE grant to develop a carbon-negative bioethanol electric vehicle charging station that operates independently of the power grid. The 3-year project uses a novel reactor system to convert raw bioethanol into hydrogen—producing electricity as a clean energy solution. Pullman Radio
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Washington State University beat the Idaho Vandals 13–10 at Gesa Field on August 30 when redshirt-freshman Jack Stevens kicked a 32-yard field goal with three seconds left to secure the win—WSU now holds an 11-game winning streak and will host San Diego State for homecoming at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, while Idaho prepares for its home opener at 1 p.m. Sept. 6. - ➤ Washington State University is hosting homecoming this weekend—today the pep rally is at 5:30 on Rogers Field and a pregame party runs Saturday from 3:00 to 6:00 before the football game kicks off at 7:15 on Gesa Field inside Martin Stadium. Pullman Radio
