COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Organizers expect the Lentil Festival in Pullman on Aug. 16 to draw about 16,000 people, with a 7:30 a.m. fun run, sports tournaments starting at 9 a.m., an 11 a.m. Grand Parade and live music beginning at 12:30 p.m.—free chili will be served at 5 p.m. at Reaney Park, making it one of the largest gatherings since 1989. - ➤ The Pullman Depot Heritage Center invites the community to Depot Days, a celebration of local history that begins today and continues tomorrow. The event will feature displays of baked goods made from local grain, recipes, the Lentil Express, and train horns at the depot. Pullman Radio
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Farmers across the region are worried that a federal report linking glyphosate to health risks may soon force a ban — they rely on the herbicide to help lower soil erosion — and warn that changing practices could raise food production costs. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ Wheat harvest is underway across Eastern Washington. In Colfax, Pacific Northwest Farmers Cooperative Grain Division Manager Randy Olstad said more rain would have improved this year’s crop—although overall quality is good and prices are expected to be better than last year despite rising costs. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pullman has narrowed its search for a new administrator to three finalists—Heather A. Jobe, Mark Schuller, and Sean R. Wells—who met at City Hall on Aug. 6. Former top administrator Mike Urban resigned and is now seeking damages for wrongful termination. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ Mayor Francis Benjamin named Public Works Director Sean Wells as Pullman's next city administrator; City Council will review his appointment on August 26th and, if confirmed, he will assume the post on September 16th—Wells has served in public roles since 1997 and earned his civil engineering degree at Washington State University. - ➤ WSU men's basketball today released its non-conference schedule for the coming season—game dates and opponents were shared to help fans plan ahead. KXLY
