EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Pullman School Board approved a balanced budget for the upcoming fiscal year and next four years, setting a $44.5 million general fund despite a $6 million shortfall caused by decreased enrollment—Finance Director Diane Hodge said salaries and special education take up most of the costs. - ➤ Garfield and Palouse school boards approved their budgets for the next fiscal year during a joint meeting; the plans include a $25,000 grant for barn painting plus kitchen renovations, a spring solar panel installation and a 2% revenue increase over four years. The boards also welcomed new Garfield superintendent Tom Korst and approved hiring middle school social studies teacher Jordyn Cook. Whitman County Gazette

- ➤ Redband Rally volunteers cleaned local parks to remove trash and debris to protect the environment — the effort helped improve community green spaces. KXLY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Public Works Director Sean Wells said the footbridge on Pine Street Plaza reopened last week after a February flood damaged it and residents praised the repair work. Additional work including armoring rocks was completed on August 6 and the bridge fully reopened on August 7 — ensuring safe access downtown. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ Pullman council left Trymaine Gaither’s seat vacant after he resigned on July 15 to move for his son's specialized services — council members decided the seat will be filled after the November election to avoid any perception of an illegal endorsement. Francis Benjamin recommended the vacancy since no candidate was appointed during the primary election. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ Lane closures start today between Babbit Road and State Route 27, Grand Avenue as repaving work began at 6 a.m. by the Washington State Department of Transportation; drivers will face reduced speed limits and one-lane alternating traffic + temporary signals Monday through Friday as the project lasts through September.
