COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The campground at Kamiak Butte county park north of Pullman reopened Monday after crews upgraded its water system—barbecue grills, bathrooms, and the day use area are now available while the campfire and charcoal ban remains in effect. Officials note that gas grills and camp stoves are still allowed in the camping area.  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yutong Liang from Kittitas County, a senior at Ellensburg High School, won Washington’s Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship Program held Saturday at Pullman High School—she will advance to the national program in Mobile, Alabama in June. Isabella Huntley of Colfax finished as first runner up and nearly $10,000 in scholarships were awarded.  Pullman Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pine Street Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Pullman is set to be lifted back onto its footings today after a February flood moved the span off its supports. Crews from Wasankari Construction began work on Monday + the adjacent plaza and riverwalk are closed today for the lift, with final inspections and rock armoring planned next week before the span fully reopens by the end of next month.  Pullman Radio
  • Washington Attorney General Nick Brown joined a group of states in a lawsuit against the USDA over its demand for detailed SNAP records—including social security numbers and home addresses—and argued this request violates federal privacy laws and the Constitution. The coalition, which includes attorneys general from multiple states and the governor of Kentucky, is challenging the unprecedented data request dating back five years.  KXLY
  • New state laws took effect this month in Washington to change worker benefits and employer requirements—employees can now use accrued sick leave for immigration help, get up to six weeks of unemployment benefits while striking, and enjoy expanded job protections under paid family medical leave. Additional changes include a new rule that stops most employers from asking for a driver’s license on job ads and a future adjustment to leave time starting January 1.  Big Country News

  • Today, local health officials reminded Pullman residents to watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke—such as heavy sweating and dizziness—to stay safe during hot weather.  KXLY
