COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Organizers of Pullman’s 36th National Lentil Festival are recruiting 100 volunteers (for tasks including vendor support and cleanup) for the August 16 event. They will also host a volunteer packet pickup pizza party (August 13) in Reaney Park to assign roles and distribute t-shirts and swag bags.  Pullman Radio

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local baker Michaela Heiszler opened Flour Power Bakery at 245 S. Grand Ave. Suite B on June 19 after a season selling goods at the Moscow Farmers Market—she saw a sellout with a line stretching down the sidewalk. The bakery offers cakes, cupcakes, macaroons, fruit tarts and custom orders while planning to expand its offerings and wholesale options for local businesses in the future.  Whitman County Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • A former WSU student, Isaac Andrade, 24, was sentenced to one year in jail for third-degree rape on Friday, July 18 in Colfax and will serve a year on probation with 10 years of sex offender registration and restitution—Andrade’s attorney said he will appeal.  Whitman County Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Palouse Music Festival will run on Saturday, July 26 at Hayton-Greene Park from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will showcase local musicians such as Naza NorthWest, Mozi Jones, and Mallard Blue—along with a beer garden and vendor offerings from Palouse Brewing, Lotus, and Miriam.  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seven high school seniors will perform at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 26 at Pullman High School theater — doors open at 2 p.m. — as part of the 68th annual Distinguished Young Woman State Program that will help send a top performer to America’s Distinguished Young Women Program next June in Mobile, Ala.  Whitman County Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Palouse Land Trust received nearly $200,000 from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust to fund conservation work in Whitman County, Latah County and north-central Idaho. The grant will help the group expand outreach and triple its land conservation portfolio (in the next five years).  Whitman County Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pullman Fire Chief Brett Nash resigned in a July 14 email because he said he could not make needed changes with the limits set by city administration; his resignation will take effect on Aug. 1. He said the decision came after much thought and conversation.  Whitman County Gazette
  • On July 16 in Colfax, county Prosecuting Attorney Denis Tracy said he passed planning board legal questions on wind turbine setbacks to a zoning expert and has not received full answers yet. County Planner Alan Thomson said the commission will finish its review plus send ordinance changes to county commissioners in several months.  Whitman County Gazette

  • A local woman encountered a bat that appears rabid while outdoors today + she is now seeking medical advice and local health officials are monitoring the situation.  KXLY
