CRIME NEWS

  • The city of Moscow announced it will create a website to post some unsealed investigative reports from the University of Idaho murders case, though records will remain sealed until Bryan Kohberger is sentenced and only reports from the Moscow Police Department will be posted—public record requests before sentencing will be denied.  KXLY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 25, the Pullman school board considered a proposal to install free solar panels on Kamiak Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School, Pullman High School and the bus depot after David Funk from Zero Emissions Northwest presented details including a $0.037/kWh rate and estimated savings of $528,000 over 10 years for local residents with low income. The board will decide on the project in about a month while the panels are expected to last 40 to 50 years with a 10-day build time.  Whitman County Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ballots for the primary election were mailed from a Spokane distribution center to 19,102 voters starting Tuesday, July 15 — additional ballots will follow — and must be postmarked by August 6 or dropped off by August 5 at 8 p.m., while only voters with candidate races received a primary ballot and all voters will get a general election ballot in November.  Whitman County Gazette
  • Pullman Fire Chief Bret Nash tendered his resignation on July 14 with his departure set for Aug. 1—he had served since February after replacing Mike Heston. City spokeswoman Meghan Ferrin confirmed his resignation but did not offer more details—Nash could not be reached for comment.  Whitman County Gazette
  • During the July 8 meeting, Parks and Facilities Director Kurt Dahmen presented a public survey showing residents wanted upgrades to park facilities—such as renovating the Aquatic Center and Reaney Pool and repairing outdoor sports courts, paths, lighting and restrooms.  Whitman County Gazette
  • The City of Pullman will launch a new Utility Access online portal this Fall to let residents pay bills, view billing history, and bundle accounts+the portal will also let residents set up text and email notifications+and request service changes.  KXLY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Real estate owners criticized the city's handling of rental registration and code enforcement after repeated form rejections and unexpected inspections at a council meeting on July 8. Kathy Wilson of DRA Real Estate said she and her clients received tickets for not registering while Mayor Francis Benjamin promised potential changes in August—offering hope for clearer communication.  Whitman County Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • WSU graduate Cedar Cunningham rowed for Team USA in World Cup events in Italy and Switzerland last month and is now training for a spot on the quad scull team for the World Championships in China; he aims to win a gold medal at the 2028 Olympic Games (his recent races in England and Sarasota boosted his profile with U.S. rowing coaches).  Whitman County Gazette
