COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Zeppoz in Pullman will host a bowling tournament tomorrow to raise funds for the food bank at Pullman Child Welfare. Check-in begins at 10:00 a.m., and the event starts at 11:00 a.m.—the $20 fee covers $10 for the prize pot, $5 for lineage, and $5 for the food bank, and bowlers who bring a non-perishable item will receive a free soda.  Pullman Radio
  • Washington State University is holding a sweet cherry sale today at its Horticulture Center in Pullman from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm plus the event will continue on July 12 and 13 with cherries priced at $4.00 per pound and bulk discounts at $2.50 per pound for orders over 250 pounds.  Pullman Radio
  • Over the summer, children in small Palouse communities from Rosalia to Troy will have their bikes repaired for free at local festivals by Scott McBeath of 3Forks Bike Shop. His repair service—funded by METER Foundation except in Garfield where the PTA supports it—will also include bike rodeos and maintenance education.  Whitman County Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spokane Street in front of Sloan Hall on WSU has been closed since early May to install new chilled water lines—its reopening was moved from early August to November. The extended closure will affect campus access while crews complete the work.  Pullman Radio
  • The Pullman School Board hired two new elementary principals on June 25—Cheyenne Weber to lead Kamiak Elementary and Elizabeth Pavlik to lead Franklin Elementary. Weber, who served as an assistant principal at Jefferson and Kamiak, and Pavlik, a former teacher with advanced degrees, said they look forward to working with staff, students, and the community.  Whitman County Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Documents show the city planned to reinstate Administrator Mike Urban after he was cleared but email exchanges reveal that negotiations over his return broke down and he was taken off payroll on May 5. Urban’s lawyer argued it was a self-serving move by the city to avoid paying full compensation—city staff later raised concerns about mayoral influence on the position.  Whitman County Gazette
  • City Council candidate forums will take place at Neill Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m.—Tuesday, July 15 for Ward No. 1 candidates and Wednesday, July 16 for Ward No. 2 candidates—and the top two from each race will advance to the Nov. 4 general election.  Whitman County Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • The WSU wrestling program will host its 5th annual golf invitational fundraiser on July 25 at Auburn Golf Course in Auburn—participants can register as a team of four or individually by July 18, and the event will tee off at 1:45 p.m. with funds set to support the 2025-2026 wrestling clubs.  Whitman County Gazette
