COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Pullman High School Class of 2015 is holding a walk-a-thon on Saturday, July 5 on the school track from 10 a.m.—11:30 a.m. to honor classmate Lauren McCluskey and is asking for donations to the Lauren McCluskey Foundation. Whitman County Gazette
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Pullman resident Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty under a deal to drop the death penalty for four counts of first-degree murder in the killing of University of Idaho students— a hearing on the plea was held July 2 before Judge Steven Hippler. Whitman County Gazette
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Port of Whitman County got a $2 million grant to build a new Technology Transfer and Commercialization Facility at Pullman Industrial Park—it will give tech companies a space with special power and waste handling needs. The project is expected to create between 170 to 300 jobs and cost between $9 to $10 million, and construction is scheduled to finish by late 2027 or in 2028. Whitman County Gazette
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pullman students Parker Hipp and Siqi Li made their colleges’ Dean’s lists — a sign their hard work was honored by their schools. Hipp had at least a 3.5 GPA in biology while students Marilla Mae Hockett from Thornton and Miyanna Gamero from Tekoa were named at Iowa State and University of Wisconsin-Madison respectively — showing strong academic performance in the area. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a Monday, June 30 meeting, Whitman County commissioners extended the wind energy moratorium and interim zoning controls ordinance for six months—until Jan. 7, 2026—after public hearings that included support from local residents. Whitman County Gazette
- ➤ Three sexual assault task force employees were honored Tuesday, July 1 in Pullman for their work in supporting victims and prosecuting cases. Whitman County Prosecuting Attorney (Denis Tracy) recognized Pullman Police Detective TJ Cornish (for digital investigation work), Victim Assistance Specialist Kristina Cooper and Senior Deputy Prosecutor Tessa Scholl for their efforts. - ➤ Dr. Lindsay Cassibry of Ollie advises local dog owners to test pavement with their hand, walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening, and carry water — steps that help keep pets safe from heatstroke — while avoiding hot surfaces and parked cars. Whitman County Gazette
