COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pullman Parks and Rec will host Movies in the Park this summer at Reaney Park—free, family-friendly movies will be shown on Friday evenings at dusk with popcorn provided by Pullman Moose Lodge. The series will run in July and includes Kung Fu Panda on July 11, Despicable Me on July 18, Cars on July 25 and Wicked on August 1.  KXLY
  • The Whitman County Rural Library District has partnered with Veteran Service Officer Becky Buri to help local veterans access their benefits. Presentations will be held at Garfield Library today at 12 pm — Malden Library on May 21 at 2 pm, and Oakesdale Library on May 28 at 1 pm.  Pullman Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • David Velasquez Jr.—who supplied tens of thousands of fentanyl-laced pills to Eastern Washington—was sentenced to over 16 years in federal prison after his October 2023 arrest in Iowa when officials recovered nearly 40,000 pills and several loaded firearms in his truck, while a co-defendant received a five-year term.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After nearly two years of review — Pullman City Council voted 4–2 to adopt new rules on short term rentals — the regulations take effect on June 1 and require operators to have a business license, safety plans, and a building inspection for properties up to a duplex size. These measures update the old rules and set clear standards for short term rental operations.  Pullman Radio
  • Acting City of Pullman Administrator Megan Vining declined to continue as interim, and Finance Director Jeff Elbracht took over as Interim City Administrator on Monday. The change comes amid a dispute over former Administrator Mike Urban’s status after he was placed on leave and later resigned, and the city is now searching for a permanent replacement.  Pullman Radio
  • Governor Bob Ferguson signed a new law on Monday that allows blood types to be added to driver’s licenses and state-issued IDs—state officials will work with healthcare providers, emergency responders, and blood donation organizations to inform the public of the new option.  KXLY
  • The Palouse Regional Transportation Planning Organization released the final draft of the Whitman County Truck and Freight Study—open for public comment until May 23—to collect feedback that may reduce downtown congestion and improve safety in Pullman. The study recommends Bishop Boulevard with an estimated cost of $6.7 million, Sand Road and Kirkendahl Road at $16.9 million, and Albion Road at $9.3 million.  Pullman Radio
