COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Friends of Gladish launched a fundraising campaign to save the historic Gladish Community & Cultural Center in Pullman after cash flow issues arose when Pullman Community Montessori closed last December. The campaign aims to raise $1 million with $650,000 set aside for urgent needs and will kick off with public events and matching gift challenges on Saturday, May 31. Pullman Radio
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Whitman County deputies arrested a 51-year-old man on May 11 in Garfield after he pointed a gun at a passing car near West Main Street and 4th Street, and customers had taken the weapon (he said people were in his house and his dog had been shot) before deputies arrived. KXLY
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Candidate filing ended Friday for local primaries with 20 candidates filing for three open Pullman City Council seats—no incumbents filed—and additional filings for two school board seats, where seven candidates are contesting one seat and four the other. The top two vote-getters in each race will move on to the November general election—hospital commissioner and Port of Whitman County Commissioner races are uncontested. Pullman Radio
- ➤ Palouse-Clearwater Environmental Institute faces an uncertain future after a key AmeriCorps grant was cut by an executive order — a move that forced the organization to breach contracts and left 3,200 volunteers and 1,000 grantees in limbo — while executive director Tom Lamar reached out to state and federal officials for support as new funding is awaited. - ➤ Pullman City Council will vote tonight at 5:30 on new short term rental regulations included in a zoning code update after nearly two years of review by the planning commission — councilmembers Nathan Weller and Megan Guido have raised concerns about including these rules in the update. - ➤ Washington State University’s Institute for Shock Physics was awarded a $32.5 million cooperative agreement renewal from the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration for a five-year period—supporting advanced research in dynamic compression science for stockpile stewardship and training the next generation of scientists.
