Good morning, Pullman. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Whitman County opened its 2025-26 community grant cycle for nonprofits focused on financial and food security, healthcare access, community resiliency, or youth opportunity with applications due by 5:00 p.m. on May 15. The agency also said Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program will face challenges after the state budget left out funding for its expansion — a move that may limit support for young readers.  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pullman High School will lay off athletic director Kruger on July 1 after the school board cuts the position amid financial challenges and reassigns her duties to an assistant principal. Many families have criticized the decision, and the board will discuss the move at its meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.  KLEW
  • Washington State University's new president Dr. Elizabeth Cantwell faces scrutiny for spending during her time at Utah State University. Records reviewed by the Salt Lake Tribune show she spent an extra $661,000 on travel, cars, office remodels and furniture including a $3,000 executive chair before moving to Pullman.  KLEW
  • The Washington Legislature ended state funding for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library when the final operating budget passed over the weekend—prompting United Way of Whitman County officials, who started the local program three years ago, to ask for private donations to keep it operating. The local program has given over 25,000 free books to about 1,300 children and now relies on community support to fill the funding gap.  Pullman Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washington Legislature approved a budget that cuts WSU’s operating funds by $10 million over the next two years and reduces public higher education funding by 1.5%. The plan provides $17 million for faculty cost of living raises—while leaving out funds for a new student workers union contract, medical college accreditation, and Climate Commitment Act compliance.  Pullman Radio
  • Drivers in Washington will pay a 6-cent per gallon gas tax increase starting July 1 — the tax will now be 55.4 cents per gallon. Governor Bob Ferguson signed the bill to add $3.2 billion to the state’s transportation budget over six years.  KLEW

SPORTS NEWS

  • WSU football has announced new kickoff times and a TV deal with the CW Network that will carry most home games while the Apple Cup in Pullman airs on CBS — the season starts with the Battle of the Palouse against Idaho on Labor Day weekend at 7:00, includes the Husky game on September 20th at either 4:30 or 5:00, and finishes with a regular season game against Oregon State on Thanksgiving weekend at 3:30.  Pullman Radio
