Good morning, Pullman. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 29th of April.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pullman High School’s outgoing athletics director Wendy Kruger received the Washington Secondary School Athletic Administrations Association’s AD Service Award on Monday at the annual conference in Tri-Cities. Her position will be eliminated on July 1—a move that has drawn criticism from Pullman families as the school board will meet Wednesday at 6:30 to discuss the change.  Pullman Radio
  • Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity at WSU will not be recognized until at least 2030 after an investigation found that new members were forced to drink alcohol and cannabis, assigned cleaning tasks for low quiz scores, and made to perform physical challenges that created a power imbalance—if it returns, it must meet strict conditions including an alcohol-free policy. The sanctions follow a review that began in January and highlight ongoing concerns about hazing practices on campus.  KXLY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are nearly finished with downtown Pullman’s road project as workers complete final tasks like putting up new light pole banner arms this week — traffic on Main Street will not be affected. The project uses $9 million in federal COVID relief funds to fix streets, underground pipes, and sidewalks after an extended closure last year, and costs have risen to about $12.5 million.  Pullman Radio
  • Lawmakers ended their 105-day session on Sunday night in Olympia by passing a $77.9 billion operating budget and a bill that caps rent hikes at the lesser of 10% or 7% plus inflation—measures that use spending cuts and new tax revenue to address a $16 billion gap; Gov. Bob Ferguson said he will review the revenue changes in the coming weeks.  KXLY

HEALTH NEWS

  • The SmileMobile will offer free dental services to eligible Pullman residents including infants getting their first tooth, children, youth, and pregnant or postpartum women using Apple Health by providing exams, fluoride varnish, sealants, extractions, fillings, and x-rays. It will visit Whitman County Public Health on May 1, 2, 5, and 8 — call 888-286-9105 for bookings — to bring care on wheels to the community.  Pullman Radio
