COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Whitman County is urging residents to contact members of Congress to restore federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program funding that supports nonprofits providing food, shelter and emergency help. The funding freeze — which led to more than $43,000 in food-related services last year — has created uncertainty and may impact this year’s Community Grant cycle as frontline providers explore solutions.  Pullman Radio
  • A fundraiser bowling tournament called the Wombat Bowling Tournament + auction is scheduled at Zeppoz in Pullman on Saturday; registration begins at 10:00 a.m. and bowling starts at 11:00 a.m. to raise funds for the Whitman County Humane Society + NW Cancer Foundation of Hope.  Pullman Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • The historic Cordova Theatre in downtown Pullman reopens with free movie showings hosted by the Pullman Foursquare Church and Promote Pullman, including a musical for all at (6:00 p.m.) today. The theatre, built in 1927 and closed in 2011, will host another free movie on the 26th.  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pullman High School’s Asian American Pacific Islander Club will host a free Multicultural Night at the school from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on April 18 — the event will feature international food, displays, games, and performances in partnership with the WSU International Center and the Pullman School District English Language Development Program.  Pullman Radio
  • Two finalists have been named for Pullman School District Assistant Superintendent: consultant Jeff Byrnes and Bozeman Schools Administrative Coach Sarah Hays. They will join a community forum on Friday the 18th at Lincoln Middle School (5:00 p.m.).  Pullman Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Palouse City Council faced tension when Councilmember Bofenkamp—worried about meeting rules—and Councilmember Griner—who said she needed more time for her family—resigned, with Mayor Tim Sievers saying disputes over policing and council operations had grown since the pandemic.  Whitman County Gazette
  • On April 7, Whitman County Public Works Director Mark Storey briefed commissioners on repairs to the Steptoe Canyon bridges after the February rainstorm. One bridge was completed—Storey said concrete pours on the second bridge and pipe repairs will start later this month while the state of emergency remains in effect.  Whitman County Gazette
  • Aaron Breshears (26 years of experience) was confirmed as Pullman Police Chief on March 8 by a unanimous City Council vote and was sworn in on April 9 following the resignation of former chief Jake Opgenorth.  Whitman County Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Washington State University's Crimson and Gray Spring Showcase will be held tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. on Gesa Field in Martin Stadium where new coach Jimmy Rogers will lead drills—later transitioning to live segments and a kids clinic; a beer garden will be set up in the West end zone and the event is free.  Pullman Radio
