COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley will host the 18th Annual Breakfast for Kids in Lewiston on Tuesday, May 6th with doors opening at 7am and a formal program starting at 8am—Club Board Member Derek Bruce chairs the event where TV star Marilu Henner will deliver the keynote and Dr. Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer will receive the Don Poe Community Spirit Award.  Big Country News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Washington State University paused non-essential hiring, salary increases, travel and training and is reviewing essential purchases — the decision comes as the university plans to reduce funding by 1-10% to stay stable in uncertain times.  KXLY
  • WSU President Kirk Schulz ended his nine-year tenure Monday and said goodbye in a post on his final day in office as he handed the role over to Dr. Elizabeth "Betsy" Cantwell, the first woman to lead the university in 135 years. He said he will advise Cantwell and plans to take a sabbatical to write a book on training new academic leaders while his wife continues her role at the Institute for Northwest Energy Futures at WSU Tri-Cities.  KXLY
  • WSU's Edward R. Murrow College of Communication hosts the 49th Annual Murrow Symposium today and Wednesday—Emmy Award-winning journalist Harry Smith will be honored with a lunch ceremony at noon in the CUB.  Pullman Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Steptoe Butte State Park North of Colfax has been closed since late February after flooding caused washouts, and the Washington State Parks Department said repaving the summit road will start late May or early June—keeping the park closed until October.  Pullman Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Whitman County Public Health reported the county’s first flu-related death this season—this loss shows that the flu remains a serious threat. Officials urged residents to get vaccinated as flu cases continue at high levels—highlighting the urgent need for protection.  KLEW
  • Whitman County Public Health confirmed the first flu death of the 2024-2025 season and reminded residents to get vaccinated as flu cases surge — officials expect rates to remain high. State data shows 357 influenza-related deaths have been recorded statewide — a number that now exceeds COVID-19 fatalities.  Pullman Radio
