CRIME NEWS

  • A man wanted for manslaughter—fugitive Aaron Hypes—was arrested safely by the Latah County Regional SWAT Team in Moscow Thursday night at 1100 North Polk Street Extension after local officers tracked him with tips from Kentucky authorities, and he is accused of trafficking fentanyl and being a persistent felony offender.  Pullman Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WSU grad student Osasere Igbinoba from the School of Food Science is seeking volunteers for a study that tests spicy beverage perception by measuring scent recognition and saliva flow. Volunteers aged 60 and over who speak English, have no food allergies, and can attend either four one-hour sessions from April 7-10 (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) or two two-hour sessions on April 5 and 6 (12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) will receive a 30-dollar gift card to Ferdinard’s Ice Cream Shoppe or Walmart.  Pullman Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eastern Washington lawmakers spoke out against a bill in Olympia that narrowly passed the Senate Wednesday and would raise hunting and fishing license fees by 38 percent. If approved, fees for big game deer will increase from $39 to $53.82 and freshwater licenses will rise from $25 to $34.50—with lower rates for seniors and an expected $19.3 million extra per biennium.  KXLY
  • Pullman city administrator Mike Urban is out of the office for an unknown time amid reports he is under investigation; Mayor Francis Benjamin named recreation manager Megan Vining as acting administrator on Thursday.  Pullman Radio
  • The League of Women Voters of Pullman and Whitman County will host a Zoom talk on disability rights history on Monday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m. (Speaker Anna EldenBrady will share activist stories that shaped legal rights and discuss ongoing work for accessibility and inclusion.)  Pullman Radio
  • Pullman Police Chief Jake Opgenorth—who was on leave since mid-December during a Washington State Patrol investigation tied to a civil dispute over an alleged affair—resigned effective Thursday as acting chief Aaron Breshears leads the department pending a permanent hire.  Pullman Radio
